Turvey Day of Folk 2023

A day of folk dance, music and song for all the family in the riverside village of Turvey, Bedfordshire, with dance displays, music session, family ceilidh and evening concert. Come and enjoy the craic and sample the excellent food and beer on offer in the village.
Featuring award-winning trio Granny's Attic, the acapella 'wall of sound' from Jack in a Barrel, a ceilidh from the awesome 3sticks and caller Barry Goodman, the incomparable (or is it incorrigible?) Letchworth Morris, and the wonderfully flamboyant Hemlock Morris.

With exceptional musicianship and boundless energy, Granny’s Attic are going from strength to strength. Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne (melodeon, anglo concertina, vocals), George Sansome (guitar, vocals) and Lewis Wood (violin, vocals) have honed their skills touring the UK and Europe since 2009. They are much loved by audiences up and down the country, with bookings everywhere from Cambridge Folk Festival to Cecil Sharp House.
The trio have been heralded for their lively performances and skilled delivery of traditional material, playing with verve, energy and their own inimitable style. Though grounded in tradition, they are keen to push new boundaries by exploring fresh approaches and writing their own compositions. In October 2021, they released their latest album, The Brickfields, an instrumental collection that sees them reach new heights both as performers and composers. Described by Folk Radio as “one of the most exciting and accomplished English folk acts on the scene right now”, this outstanding trio can hold audiences in the palm of their hand.

Jack in a Barrel

Jack in a Barrel are a seven-piece acapella group based in Bedfordshire. They have been performing regularly at folk clubs and festivals since forming in 2018, and recorded their debut album, “I Know Not Where I Live” in 2019. JiaB sing a range of traditional and “sounds traditional” songs from standards like John Ball to more reflective numbers like John Tams’ Devonshire Carol, taking in the odd shanty and music hall number along the way.
They make the most of the seven voices in their arrangements, whether it’s to create a Wall of Sound or to produce close, squishy harmonies.
There are always plenty of opportunities to join in, so come ready to sing. And watch out for their Spotty Dick.

3sticks are highly regarded favourites on the UK Ceilidh and festival circuit as well as veterans of numerous functions including weddings and family celebrations.
The band are a three piece consisting fiddle, guitar and percussion and play a wide range of music from the British Isles and Europe.

Barry Goodman

Barry is well known as a singer, compere, caller, musician and dancer as well as being a writer of songs, dances and tunes. As a caller he has worked with many of the finest ceilidh bands in the country. He likes to make dancers feel relaxed and confident and his clear but relaxed style of teaching the dances has made him a popular choice at folk festivals and ceilidhs nationwide.
Barry also presents illustrated talks on English customs, "Good Morning, Lords and Ladies" and "Traditional Treasures", together with his wife, Gill.

Letchworth Morris

Letchworth Morris were established in 1922 in the newly built 'Garden City' of Letchworth by a group of folk dance enthusiasts, and are one of the original six sides (or clubs) who formed the Morris Ring in 1934, becoming a mixed side in 2021. They celebrated their centenary in 2022 and are proud to continue the tradition of Morris dancing in the Cotswold style in the Letchworth area.

Hemlock Morris

Hemlock Morris are a mixed (male and female) morris side, based in Bedford. They dance a variety of dances from the Cotswold and Border styles of morris, from old, traditional dances collected over 100 years ago to contemporary dances written in the last 10 years.
Hemlock look quite different from most people’s perception of morris dancing - they are more likely to be seen wearing corsets, rag coats and feathers than crisp white shirts and breeches! They like to wear colourful face paints in a mixture of patterns, usually featuring their trademark black, green and purple colours.
Their intention is to continue and develop the traditions within morris dancing, enrich their community, dance to the best of their ability and - most of all - have fun.
